Dr. Daniel Penello, a fellowship-trained and double Board-Certified orthopedic hand surgeon, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complicated disorders of the hand, wrist, and elbow. He has devoted over ten years serving the St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Tampa Bay communities. As a recognized Top Hand Surgeon in 2012 and 2020, he has maintained a commendable reputation among his peers for his professional excellence in this field. In his current position as Partner with Alexander Orthopaedic Associates in Florida, he continuously strives to create an excellent patient experience and utilizes state-of-the-art technology and surgical techniques to enhance recovery and patient outcomes. As a testament to his innovation, creativity and skill, Dr. Penello received national acclaim for being the first surgeon in the country to implant a custom 3D-printed titanium bone into a patient whose finger had been crushed by a 2000 lbs steel beam!

Inspired by his father’s hand injury, Dr. Penello decided to pursue his career in medicine as early as high school. Soon thereafter, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at York University in Toronto, Canada. He earned his Medical Degree from The University of Toronto with Honors in 2002 and was later admitted to the esteemed Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Following Medical School, he completed his Internship and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at The University of Toronto where he was recognized for his academic achievements and teaching ability. This recognition garnered him several scholarships and awards, including Teaching Awards, Humanitarianism Awards and Top Doctor Award in 2012 and 2020 for Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity. Dr. Penello’s dedication to health policy, process improvement, and commercialization of medical devices led him to receive a Health Sector MBA at The Rotman School of Management in Toronto during his residency. He then completed a Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, Ohio. With a commitment to excellence, he is Board-Certified by The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Remaining abreast of the latest advancements in his field, Dr. Penello maintains active memberships with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS), the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Florida Orthopedic Society (FOS), the American Medical Association (AMA), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), the Canadian Orthopedic Association (COA), and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

When he is not treating patients, Dr. Penello is in constant pursuit of sharing his breadth of expertise as a Teaching Faculty for the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine Orthopaedic Residency Program. He has authored and co-authored publications in both the United States and Canada.

In his spare time, Dr. Penello enjoys swimming, boating, reading, cycling and playing with his twin children. He and his wife Maggie are regular donors to the John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Foundation and supporters of the NICU Fellowship Program and Learning Center.
