She embarked on her academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the College of William and Mary in 1996. Dr. Southern continued to excel academically, culminating in her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, College of Dentistry, in 2000. In 2000, Dr. Southern embarked on her professional journey, establishing her practice in Pulaski, Virginia, where she has served as the president. Her journey in dentistry began alongside her late father, who was also a dentist, showcasing a family tradition of dental excellence.

Her exceptional contributions to dentistry were recognized when her practice was voted among the top two in Southwest Virginia in The Virginia Magazine in 2023. She has also received the prestigious Excellence in Prosthodontics Award from VCU School of Dentistry.

Dr. Southern's family legacy in dentistry continues with her mother, Mrs. Brenda Martin, a certified dental hygienist, and in loving memory of her late father, Donald Martin, DDS. Inspired by their mother's dedication, Dr. Southern's children are also pursuing careers in dental medicine, with her daughter in her second year of dental school and her son recently applying for acceptance into the program. They both aspire to join their mother's practice once they receive their credentials.
