Dr. Guy Plunkett, III, PhD, has dedicated his career to advancing science and education, contributing groundbreaking work in bacteriology and genetic engineering. A nationally recognized scientist and educator, Dr. Plunkett combines decades of expertise with a commitment to research that has strengthened the scientific community’s understanding of microbial systems.

Dr. Plunkett earned his Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing both his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He further deepened his expertise with postdoctoral studies in molecular biology at the University of California, Berkeley—solidifying a foundation that has supported his influential work ever since.

Dr. Plunkett is a respected member of the American Society for Microbiology and the Bergey’s International Society for Microbial Systematics, reflecting his dedication to advancing knowledge and stewardship within the scientific field. Among his significant accomplishments is a U.S. patent for developing genome strains for E. coli, a contribution that continues to shape research in genetics and microbiology.

Throughout his career Dr. Plunkett has been guided by the wisdom and support of mentors, from his high school chemistry teacher, Mrs. Henrietta Schwartz, to his last colleague/collaborator/employer before his retirement from the university, Dr. Nicole Perna. Their influence helped him build a career marked by both rigorous discovery and an unwavering dedication to education. He fondly honors the memory of his late wife, Joanne Harper Plunkett, who shared in his journey and inspired his commitment to using science as a tool for positive change.
