GWENDOLYN D SHIELDS - PROFESSOR

Sturgis, MS - Prominently featured in The Inner Circle, Gwendolyn D Shields, PhD is acknowledged as a Pinnacle Life Achiever Legacy for her contributions to Science Education and Materials Research.

Gwendolyn D. Shields, PhD, has established a distinguished career in science education, research, and student mentorship, earning recognition for her expertise in wood preservation, wood chemistry, and polymer chemistry. Throughout a career spanning more than 35 years, she has combined academic excellence, scientific research, and a deep commitment to student development, helping countless learners pursue meaningful careers in science and related fields.

Dr. Shields currently serves as an Associate Professor at Mississippi State University, a position she has held since 2023. In this role, she provides instruction, conducts research, and participates in outreach initiatives focused on wood preservation, wood chemistry, polymer chemistry, and forest products. Her work emphasizes not only scientific advancement but also the mentorship and career guidance of undergraduate and graduate students.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Alcorn State University in 1986 before continuing her education at Mississippi State University, where she completed a Master of Science in Forest Products in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Forest Products in 1998. In addition, she earned a degree in Christian Studies from Biblical Seminary, reflecting her lifelong commitment to both education and faith.

Dr. Shields is widely respected for her expertise in forest products and materials science. Throughout her career, she has contributed to advancing academic programs, supporting research initiatives, and helping students develop the knowledge and skills necessary for professional success. She is particularly proud of the many students she has mentored who have gone on to achieve their academic and career aspirations.

Prior to joining Mississippi State University, Dr. Shields served as an Associate Professor at Alcorn State University from 1999 to 2022. During her tenure, she played an important role in educating future scientists and researchers while fostering opportunities for student engagement and professional growth. She has also served as a judge for science fairs and undergraduate and graduate student poster competitions, encouraging excellence in scientific inquiry and research.

Her professional affiliations include membership in the Forest Products Society, the American Chemical Society, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, and the Mississippi Forestry Association. Through these organizations, she has remained actively engaged with developments in science, education, and industry.

Outside of academia, Dr. Shields serves as pastor of a local church in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She is also a supporter of Scouting America and various charitable, educational, and religious organizations. Her commitment to service reflects a belief that leadership extends beyond the classroom and laboratory into the broader community.

Among her many professional honors, Dr. Shields has been recognized by Marquis Who's Who Top Educators for her dedication, achievements, and leadership in science education.

She credits much of her success to the influence of her uncle, an educator who inspired her pursuit of teaching, as well as supportive colleagues who provided guidance and encouragement throughout her career.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Shields plans to retire from academia and transition into full-time ministry while continuing to guide students toward educational and professional opportunities both locally and globally. Guided by the belief that education is about shaping lives rather than simply preparing individuals for financial success, she remains committed to helping young people discover careers aligned with their interests, talents, and purpose.

Her philosophy is simple yet profound: life is measured not by accomplishments alone, but by the memories, impact, and opportunities one leaves behind for others. Through her work as an educator, researcher, mentor, and minister, Dr. Shields continues to leave a lasting legacy of service, knowledge, and inspiration.
