JUAN F. GUTIERREZ-MAZORRA, MD, FASA - PRESIDENT & PROFESSOR IN PEDIATRIC ANESTHESIA

Vestavia, AL - Prominently featured in The Inner Circle, Juan F. Gutierrez-Mazorra, MD, FASA is acknowledged as a Pinnacle Lifetime Member for his contributions to a Lifetime of Excellence in Pediatric Anesthesiology.

Juan F. Gutierrez-Mazorra, MD, FASA, President & Professor in Pediatric Anesthesia, has devoted more than five decades to advancing pediatric anesthesiology, earning national recognition for his clinical excellence, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to the care of children. As President of Pediatric Anesthesia Associates PC and a longtime leader at Children's Hospital of Alabama, he has helped shape one of the nation's premier pediatric anesthesia programs while mentoring generations of physicians and advancing the specialty through education, innovation, and compassionate care.

Board certified in anesthesiology with subspecialty certification in pediatric anesthesiology, Dr. Gutierrez-Mazorra specializes in the perioperative management of infants and children undergoing surgery, including the care of patients with complex medical conditions and difficult airway management utilizing advanced technology. His expertise also encompasses intensive care oversight, postoperative recovery, operating room management, legal medicine and risk management consulting, and the education and mentorship of future anesthesiologists. Throughout his career, he has remained dedicated to ensuring that children and their families feel informed, supported, and confident throughout the surgical experience.

Dr. Gutierrez-Mazorra earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, graduating cum laude from Northeastern University in 1965, before receiving his Doctor of Medicine from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1969. He completed an internship in anesthesiology at West Virginia University, followed by a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at the University of Alabama Hospital and Children's Hospital of Alabama, establishing the foundation for an extraordinary career devoted to pediatric medicine.

Serving as Chief of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital of Alabama for 55 years, Dr. Gutierrez-Mazorra transformed the department into one of the country's leading pediatric anesthesia programs. Under his leadership, the service expanded from four operating rooms staffed by two anesthesiologists and five certified registered nurse anesthetists to a comprehensive program with 20 anesthesiologists, 50 certified registered nurse anesthetists, and approximately 45,000 surgical cases annually. His leadership also helped establish the hospital as a leading referral center for children with complex medical conditions requiring specialized surgical care.

A founding member of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia and Member No. 16 since 1970, Dr. Gutierrez-Mazorra has remained actively involved in advancing the specialty throughout his career. He is also affiliated with the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Anesthesia and Pain Management, Children's Hospital of Alabama, and has served in numerous clinical faculty appointments dedicated to educating future physicians.

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to pediatric anesthesiology, Dr. Gutierrez-Mazorra received the prestigious Robert M. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Anesthesia and Pain Management in 2010.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Gutierrez-Mazorra enjoys hunting and fishing. He gratefully acknowledges the guidance of his mentor, Dr. John G. Adams, while honoring the memories of Dr. Theodore Stryker and Dr. Chris Abajian for their lasting influence on his professional development. He also pays tribute to his parents, Francisco Alberto Gutierrez-Pelaez, MD, and Maria Eugenia Rissett Mazorra-Vega de Gutierrez, MD, whose example inspired his lifelong dedication to medicine.

Looking ahead, Dr. Gutierrez-Mazorra plans to continue contributing to pediatric anesthesiology through consultation, education, mentorship, and advocacy. Guided by a philosophy centered on trust, humility, and compassionate patient care, he remains committed to optimizing outcomes for children while providing reassurance and confidence to every family entrusted to his care.
