Dr. Mark L. Goldberger, a highly regarded general neurosurgeon, has dedicated over two decades to the field of neurosurgery, leaving an indelible mark on the local medical community. His extensive expertise in various aspects of neurosurgery, combined with a commitment to patient-centered care, has made him a respected figure in the medical profession. He has worked as a neurosurgeon at Mt. Clemens General Hospital from 2001 to 2004 and has been in private practice at Michigan Head and Spine Institute from 2005 to present. 

Dr. Goldberger's journey in medicine commenced with a strong educational foundation. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Neurobiology and Physiology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and furthered his studies, obtaining a Master of Science (MS) in Neurobiology and Physiology from Northwestern University in Chicago. His passion for neurosurgery led him to the Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Completing his residency in Neurological Surgery at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lansing, Michigan, Dr. Goldberger honed his surgical skills and developed a profound understanding of complex neurosurgical procedures. He earned certification from the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery—Neurosurgery in 2006 and re-certified in 2016.

The highly regarded physician is an expert in general neurosurgery with specialization in cranial and spinal neurotrauma; cervical, thoracic, and lumbar fusion; kyphoplasty; vertebroplasty; disk arthroplasty; minimally invasive spinal surgery; cerebral angiography; surgical pain management; and the treatment of workers’ compensation and auto injuries. He is an authority in complex and reconstructive spinal surgery; trauma; degenerative spine disease; and neurosurgical oncology. 

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Goldberger has been affiliated with esteemed medical organizations such as the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA), and the Michigan Association of Neurological Surgeons (MANS). Dr. Goldberger's dedication to patient care and his expertise in complex spinal surgery and neurosurgical oncology have positioned him as a leader in the field. His compassionate approach to medicine centers on effective communication and patient-centered care. He believes that listening to the patient is paramount in providing the best possible healthcare experience and asserts that following his philosophy of emphasizing the importance of effective communication and providing patient-centered care has been central to his extraordinary career.


Outside the operating room, Dr. Goldberger enjoys pursuing his passion for golf; offshore, flats, and fly fishing; remote portaging; canoeing and camping; and cherishing moments spent with his family. His favorite places to visit are Peru and Alaska. He acknowledges the unwavering support of his loving wife, Kimberly, and fondly remembers his parents, Gerald N. Goldberger, PhD, and the late Lois L. Goldberger. As he looks forward to retirement after a long and successful career in neurosurgery, Dr. Goldberger leaves behind a legacy of healing, compassion, and dedication to improving the lives of his patients.
