MICHAEL G. GUERTIN, MD, MDA, CPE, FASA - MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Powell, OH - Prominently featured in The Inner Circle, Michael G. Guertin, MD, MDA, CPE, FASA is acknowledged as a Pinnacle Professional Member Inner Circle Of Excellence for his contributions to Anesthesiology and Perioperative Leadership.

Dr. Guertin is a recognized leader in anesthesiology and perioperative care who has guided operations and strategy at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for many years. Serving for five years as chief perioperative medical director, he oversees operating room management and efficiency while advancing institutional growth and quality. Since 2019, he has also been a professor of anesthesiology and concurrently directs the Faculty Leadership Institute at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where he cultivates leadership across all seven health sciences colleges.

With deep expertise in anesthesiology, ambulatory anesthesiology, perioperative care, leadership development, and operational efficiency improvement, Dr. Guertin’s work spans clinical care and system-level transformation. His portfolio includes perioperative medical leadership, operational management of operating rooms, and the redesign of preoperative and perioperative processes to elevate patient safety, quality, and throughput.

Among his notable innovations, Dr. Guertin created ComPASS (Comprehensive Perianesthesia Systems and Solutions), a program that streamlines preoperative assessment and enhances surgical recovery. He has helped steer the medical center through significant expansion, including new ambulatory sites and a new hospital tower, and has been instrumental in advancing physician-led ambulatory surgery in central Ohio. As medical director of ambulatory surgical services from 2013 to 2022, he oversaw the growth of outpatient surgical capabilities and reinforced excellence in patient care.

Dr. Guertin’s earlier appointments include associate professor of anesthesiology at The Ohio State University from 2013 to 2019 and partner with Premier Anesthesiologists at The Ohio Surgery Center from 1998 to 2013, where he also served as medical director and on the board of directors from 2009 to 2013. He began his academic career as an assistant professor of anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Medical Center from 1992 to 1998 and has contributed through extensive institutional committee service.

A strong academic foundation underpins his leadership. Dr. Guertin earned a BA in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Wayne State University in 1984; an MD from Wayne State University in 1988; and completed a residency in anesthesiology at The Ohio State University in 1992. He later received an MBA from The Ohio State University in 2015. He holds the CPE (Certified Physician Executive) credential and is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA).

His professional affiliations include the American Association of Physician Leaders, the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA), and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Civically engaged, he is a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus (Assembly 3932 and Council 11445) since 2004 and the founder of A Day Away, a nonprofit supporting individuals facing serious illnesses. He has appeared on five podcasts, including Disruptors in Healthcare. Honors include the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, the Department of Anesthesiology Teacher-of-the-Year at The Ohio State University (1995), and recognition as a Weidler Scholar by the Fisher College of Business (2015).

Guided by principles of compassionate service, operational excellence, continuous learning, and the development of others, Dr. Guertin considers his most meaningful achievement to be his impact on leadership development across the health sciences at Ohio State. Looking ahead, he is pursuing advanced study in longevity and regenerative medicine through an A4M fellowship, intends to complete coaching certification with the Hudson Institute of Coaching, and will continue supporting organizations that seek to build physician leadership talent.
