Apex, North Carolina -- Miles W. Whitaker MD is being
recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Distinguished Ophthalmologist for his
work over the last 30+ years.
Dr. Whitaker began his career in ophthalmology while serving
in the United States Army. He started at Fort Bragg, Womack Army MEDDAC in 1986
as a general medical officer on the job training in ophthalmology. He
subsequently completed his residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in
Denver Colorado. He later served as chief ophthalmologist at the 98th General
Hospital in Nuremberg Germany and then again at Kenner Army medical hospital at
Fort Lee Virginia. He left the military in 1993 to pursue a civilian career. He
practiced for over 20 years in Fayetteville and Sanford North Carolina for a large
ophthalmology group. He then left to create an ophthalmology program at
Pinehurst Surgical clinic from 2013 till present, where he continues to serve
Sanford, Pinehurst and the surrounding areas.
His areas of expertise include cataract surgery, ophthalmic plastic surgery,
macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye syndrome. He
has performed over 15,000 surgeries and thousands of laser procedures. He is
very passionate about what he does, and he is grateful that God gave him a gift
for helping others.
To complete his medical training, Dr Whitaker first attained his undergraduate
degree in biology from UCLA with magna cum laude honors. He then excelled at
Loma Linda University to obtain his medical degree.
Dr. Whitaker is Board Certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of
ophthalmology, an independent nonprofit organization that upholds the high
standards of ophthalmology. He is also a member of the Lee County and North
Carolina medical societies and holds membership in the American Academy of
ophthalmology. During his career, Dr. Whitaker has given numerous lectures to
other eye doctors.
In his spare time, he enjoys tennis, travel, surfing, and cycling. He is a
world traveler and has participated in multiple medical mission trips. He
enjoys spending time with his family, including his four children and his
granddaughter. If he ever retires, Dr. Whitaker hopes to go on more medical
mission trips and continue to serve others in need.
