Becerra Slavens started her career in massage therapy at age 59, after working for several years as a certified hairdresser and dental assistant. While engrossed in those fields, she volunteered at the Student Therapist Program at Good Shepherd Hospice in Kansas City, and found that she wanted to utilize the skills and talents she acquired there.
“I have always been a giver and love to help, and to be there for people,” Becerra Slavens said.
Sweet Dreams Custom Massage was established in 2011, shortly after Becerra Slavens finished massage school in 2009. She cultivated a reputation as a “first-class massage therapist and businesswoman” and utilizes her skills in sciatic care, hot storms, aromatherapy, geriatric care, relaxation techniques and deep tissue massage as well as business skills including marketing and planning.
In recognition of her hard work, Becerra Slavens was awarded a 2015 Kansas City Award in the Massage Therapy category. “We achieved exceptional marketing success in the local community and business category,” she said. Sweet Dreams Custom Massage has also been accredited by the Better Business Bureau.
For those starting out in the massage therapy field, Becerra Slavens advises “exploring all options before jumping in. The nature of the job allows people to work in any city of country they choose. Massage therapists can hold position on cruise ships; and at spas and doctor’s offices.”
When not working, Becerra Slavens works with children at her church on Sundays, teaching children about the Bible and the works of Jesus. She also participates in community programs, including Kingdom Kids. She also helps out with special events at the mall as Marketing Director and donates chair massages to the local North Kansas City football team. Becerra Slavens also spends time gaining further knowledge about essential oils.
