Founded in 1888 with the aim to serve farming families who could not afford medical care, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center has grown to become an international leader in both clinical research and rehabilitative medicine.
A seasoned medical doctor with nearly fifty years of experience, Dr. Rubayi has been working at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center for over thirty years. In this capacity, he specializes in reconstructive plastic surgery. Throughout his illustrious career at the rehabilitation center, he established the pressure ulcer management program; a center for the county of Los Angeles and California which highlights residency training for plastic surgery students at USC and UCLA.
Dr. Rubayi is on the Chair of Rancho's Department of Surgery and Chief of the Pressure Ulcer Management and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Programs, and in addition to private practice is also a Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery at the University of Southern California. Dr. Rubayi has been involved in an array of medical research at the esteemed university in subjects including: various forms of surgeries, wound care and management, spinal cord injuries, pressure ulcer development, burns and more.
Moreover, Dr. Rubayi has received several honors and distinctions throughout the course of his illustrious career. The most notable honors to date was his election as a Fellow of the International Medical Society of Paraplegia by the Executive Committee of IMSOP in 2000, as well as Physician Recognition awards by the American and California Medical Associations in the late 80s. At UCLA’s commencement in 2011, he was presented with the Plastic Surgery Clinical Faculty award for Excellence in Residency Education.
To keep up with the latest advancements in medicine, Dr. Rubayi is an active member of ACP, ISA, ICS and the American Spinal Association. In addition to his countless public speaking and conference engagements, he is also in the process of publishing his first book, titled “Reconstructive Plastic Surgery of Pressure Ulcers.” Currently, there are about twenty seven publications regarding pressure ulcers and reconstructive surgery.
The recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award from the Rancho Los Amigos Foundation, Dr. Rubayi is an esteemed Fellow of the International College of Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and the International Medical Society of Paraplegia.
Dr. Rubayi earned his Medical degree from the University of Baghdad Medical College and upon graduation, he was ranked in the top ten percentage of the 230 graduates. He went on to be trained in England in both general and plastic surgery.
